New sea-safety rules cover dangerous goods and lost containers
IMO rules taking effect on 1 January include IMDG amendment 42-24 and mandatory reporting of lost containers.
The revised IMDG Code incorporating amendment 42-24 became mandatory for packaged dangerous goods carried by sea. Separately, SOLAS and MARPOL amendments introduced reporting requirements for freight containers lost overboard.
The container-reporting duty principally concerns the vessel and relevant authorities. For shippers, accurate dangerous-goods identification remains a practical priority, including batteries and chemicals that cannot simply be described as ordinary accessories.
