How transport connects the journey
- 01 Pack
Choose packaging suitable for the contents and the transport mode.
- 02 Consolidate
Bring cargo to the departure facility and confirm the booking and cutoff.
- 03 Move
The main transport leg connects origin and destination; transfers may follow.
- 04 Hand over
Complete destination handling, clearance and the agreed final delivery.
What the service covers
Less than container load combines different customers' consignments inside one container. You buy a defined shipping service for your cargo rather than exclusive container use. It can suit smaller batches, but the choice depends on handling, dimensions and the full quotation, not simply whether your shipment is too small to fill a container.
Follow the shipment
Cargo normally goes to a consolidation warehouse, is received and grouped, moves by sea, then is separated at a destination warehouse before release and delivery. These extra handling points make clear package identification important. Ask whether the service is direct consolidation or includes intermediate transfers, and who controls each warehouse handover.
Read the quotation
Request an itemised origin, ocean and destination quotation. Identify collection, receiving, consolidation, documents, customs services, separation, release, delivery and possible storage charges. Some items use W/M, some apply per shipment and others have minimums. A low ocean-freight line cannot tell you what the consignee must pay before receiving the goods.
A practical example
For illustration, cargo measuring 2 cubic metres and weighing 600 kilograms would use 2 W/M units if the quote compares cubic metres with metric tonnes. That does not determine every fee: a handling item may have its own minimum or flat charge. Request a worked quotation showing each line's actual calculation.
Avoid common mistakes
Do not mistake a minimum charge for a different weight-to-volume conversion. Nor should you assume that non-stackable cargo is priced like stackable cartons. Accurate package dimensions include the final pallet or crate. Ask how remeasurement, additional handling or a change in package count affects the accepted quotation.
Prepare before sending
Mark every package consistently with the packing list and confirm the warehouse acceptance deadline. Before sailing, obtain the destination agent's details and release requirements. Tell the consignee what documents, payments and collection arrangements remain, then keep the final warehouse measurements and delivery evidence for reconciliation and any timely enquiry.
Before you ship
- Get itemised charges at both ends.
- Confirm minimums and handling restrictions.
- Obtain destination release instructions.
