EU packaging rules begin applying, with later milestones ahead
The new framework addresses packaging composition, waste and recyclability; some major targets arrive in 2030.
The European Commission announced that new packaging and packaging-waste rules apply from 12 August. The framework sets requirements for packaging placed on the EU market and seeks to reduce unnecessary material and empty space.
Implementation is phased: the announcement identifies 2030 milestones for recyclability and restrictions on certain single-use formats. Businesses should distinguish today’s requirements from future deadlines, rather than treating every target as immediately effective.
