Wood Packaging Explained: Fumigation, Heat Treatment and ISPM 15 Shipping with wood? Check first. Shipping on a wooden pallet? Check the packaging before the cargo leaves. Untreated wood can carry pests across borders. I S P M fifteen sets international measures to reduce that risk. Solid wood needs attention Solid wood pallets, crates, packing blocks and dunnage can fall within the standard. Where the destination requires compliance, regulated wood packaging needs approved treatment and an official mark. Always check the importing country's current requirements. Some materials are exempt Packaging made entirely from processed wood, such as plywood or particle board, is generally exempt from I S P M fifteen. So is packaging made entirely from wood six millimeters thick or less. Plastic, paper and metal are outside its wood packaging scope. Plywood outside. Solid wood inside? But a plywood box can still have solid wood runners or braces. Those regulated components still need attention. Exemption from this standard does not remove other destination biosecurity requirements. Heat treatment is not fumigation Fumigation uses a chemical treatment. Heat treatment uses a controlled heating process. These are different approved approaches, not the same thing. Use an authorized provider. Treatment reduces pest risk; it does not guarantee permanent protection from reinfestation. Read the official mark Look for the I P P C symbol, a country code, a producer or treatment provider code, and a treatment code. H T and D H indicate heating methods. M B and S F indicate fumigation methods. Never create or apply a certification mark yourself. Make the mark easy to inspect Marks should be legible, permanent and visible, preferably on two opposite sides. Avoid red or orange marks. Handwritten marks are not acceptable. Check for damaged packaging, bark and pest activity, and confirm compliance with the provider. Check once. Ship with confidence. Noncompliant packaging can lead to delays, treatment, return or destruction, depending on local rules. Confirm the material, approved treatment, official mark and destination requirements before shipping. Find the full guide at From China Hub dot com.
